It rarely gets the marketing budget that cloud does, but for the right workloads it can be dramatically cheaper and give you back a kind of control the hyperscalers don't offer.


Colocation — often shortened to "colo" — means renting space in a professional data center to house servers and networking gear you own, while the facility provides the power, cooling, physical security, and network connectivity. You bring the hardware; they bring the building, the redundant power, the fire suppression, and the 24/7 staff. Think of it as leasing a highly specialized apartment for your equipment instead of building and running the whole building yourself.

When colocation is the right call


Colocation tends to win when you have significant, steady infrastructure that runs continuously; when data sovereignty, latency, or compliance requires you to control your own hardware; when you've outgrown a server closet but a full cloud migration would be expensive or risky; or when you're running power-hungry workloads (like AI training or inference) where cloud GPU bills have become eye-watering. It's also a natural fit as a disaster-recovery site.


It's the wrong call when your workloads are small, spiky, or still being figured out — cloud's elasticity is genuinely valuable there — or when you have no appetite to own and refresh hardware at all.


What to ask before you sign


  • Power and density. How much power per rack can the facility actually deliver and cool, and what happens if you need more?

  • Redundancy. What Tier level, and what's the real, contractual uptime commitment?

  • Carrier neutrality. Can you choose among multiple network providers, or are you locked to the facility's own?

  • Expansion rights. If you grow, is adjacent space guaranteed, and at what price?

  • Remote hands. When your gear needs a physical touch at 2 a.m., who does it and what does it cost?

  • Total cost. Space, committed power, metered power, cross-connects, and remote hands — modeled over the full term.


Frequently asked questions


Is colocation the same as cloud? No. In the cloud you rent computing on someone else's hardware. In colocation you own the hardware and rent the data center space and infrastructure around it. Colo gives more control; cloud gives more elasticity.


Who owns the servers in a colocation setup? You do. That's the defining difference. The provider owns the building, power, and cooling; you own and manage the equipment inside your space.
